Thoughts About Writing I

Scribo ergo sum. (I write; therefore, I am.)

My late father used to talk about how we all write our own stories. Some of us choose happy endings and some of us choose sad endings. And some of us are at the mercy of an unsympathetic editor who continually rewrites our material.

All great writers have a bit of OCD in their makeup. And, I suspect, a bit of MPD as well.

Is it worse to be a supporting character in someone else's story and wind up with a happy ending or to play the lead in one's own story and wind up with a tragic ending? And what about those poor souls who don't get a choice?

Which is greater: the writer who uses a vocabulary that can be only understood by a thousand people or the writer who uses a vocabulary that can be understood by a million people?

Few writers experience as much danger or hardship on the job as the average factory worker. But one would never know that from the way many writers talk.

When you grow up among people who have worked in steel mills and automobile factories, it seems a bit obscene to go on and on about how "hard" it is to be a writer. Especially when the hardest part about being a writer is rarely the actual writing. It is finding something to write about that people are actually willing to pay you to write about.

Should I find it ironic that the most honest stuff I write is usually written under a pen name?

How come you hear so much about people writing short stories but never about anyone writing a long story?

Thoughts About Sex

1. Is America really a puritanical country or are we a hedonist country in a state of denial?

2. When it comes to one's sexual past, men tend to exaggerate, women tend to downplay.

3. Conservatives always exaggerate the amount of sex in popular culture. Liberals always downplay the amount of sex in popular culture. And yet conservatives tend to produce more children than liberals, either because liberals are more adept in their knowledge of contraceptives or else because conservatives, when dealing with sex, tend to prefer practice over theory while liberals tend to be the exact opposite.

4. No matter how liberal or conservative our culture becomes, the popular culture will never be liberal enough for liberals nor conservative enough for conservatives. At best it will reach a happy medium.

5. Pornography is that which sexually arouses the weirdo down the block. Erotica is what arouses people like you or me.

6. Men find a naked woman to be far sexier than a woman clad in lingerie yet women prefer lingerie over nudity when they have a choice.

Thoughts on Viewing a Display of Discounted Easter Candy

I can understand the reason why someone might want to devour a chocolate rabbit, a chocolate chick or even a chocolate lamb.

But why would anyone in his or her right mind want to eat a chocolate bug?

A friend recently told me that we don't necessarily choose the people we love; we only choose what we do about that love. In other words, we shouldn't feel obliged to act like a schmuck just because we're in love with somebody. Life hands you quite enough opportunities to feel like a jerk; only a true jerk goes out of his or her way to make yet more such opportunities.

There's a person in my life for whom I care very much. However, my feelings for that person does not absolve me of my obligations to treat with respect other people for whom I have no such feelings. And I do not wish to be absolved of such obligations.

When you truly love somebody, you want what's best for that person. Even if what's best doesn't necessarily include you...
