Christmas Song of the Week: "Father Christmas"

It took me a long time to appreciate this song. On one hand, it's one of the most cynical Christmas song ever recorded; on the other, it has a genuinely idealistic message that lacks the self-congratulation that mars similar efforts like "We Are the World" and "Do They Know It's Christmas?" Of course, YMMV but I would like to think the song is still worth listening to if only for the last few lines.

Pop Song of the Week: "Arizona"

Yes, it's corny but its use over the opening credits of the 2018 movie with the same name marks one of the few good moments in that same movie -- even if said use doesn't make a whole lot of sense in the context of that movie. Oh, well. It's still a nice piece of Nixon-era ear candy -- even though you all may have a hard time believing that it was sung by the same vocalist who once headed up the 1960s group Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Former Fleetwood Mac member and solo artist Bob Welch, most famous for such songs as "Ebony Eyes" and "Sentimental Lady," decided to join Kurt Cobain in rock and roll purgatory two days ago at age 65.

He will be missed.

R.I.P. Robin Gibb

Singer Robin Gibb, one of the founding members of the 1960s pop group known as The Bee Gees, sang his last note this past Sunday at age 62.

He will be missed.

R.I.P. Donna Summer

American singer Donna Summer, most famous for such hits as "I Feel Love" and "She Works Hard for the Money," performed her last dance this morning at age 63.

She will be missed.

I look forward to the happy day when I can begin paying them back for all their aid.
