El 4 de Julio

July 4th means many things to many people, but to me, it will always mean first and foremost my late father's birthday.

My father was not born in the United States but he eventually became a citizen here, and had he not come to this country, the chances are my siblings and I would not exist.

He was not a perfect man but he was a good man who always tried to do his best, and by his example alone, he taught me more about true virtue than a hundred sermons ever could. He was not always wise but he was one of the smartest men I knew. He always encouraged me to be a better person than I thought I could be, and for that alone, I'll always treasure him.

I don't know the words to truly do him justice. But I like to think I'm following his path every time I go out of my way to help someone or I speak out against injustice.

He was my father.

There's little more I can say apart from that.

¡Feliz Cuatro de Julio!

On behalf of myself and my family, Ms. Julianne Hough has taken it upon herself to wish all of my readers a happy Fourth of July. I hope that you all enjoy the day as well. After all, today is also the birthday of my late father so it would be very special to me in any case.

¡Feliz Cuatro de Julio!

Actor Danny Trejo wishes my readers all the best for this noble holiday. At least I'd like to think that's what he's doing.

On a more serious note, it's also my late father's birthday. He is still most seriously missed.

Trailer of the Week: Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942)

If one can't be reminded of Jimmy Cagney's most famous movie musical on July 4th weekend, when can one be reminded of it?

¡Feliz Cuatro de Julio!

Fellow Hispanic half and half Charisma Carpenter is reminding me to stop getting wrapped up in my own affairs so that I can wish all my readers a happy 4th of July. I'm not so sure her choice of wardrobe is all that appropriate but then it is a holiday.

P.S. On a more serious note, today is also my late father's birthday. And earlier today I was having an early birthday celebration with my family since my actual birthday falls on a Tuesday this year and most of them have to work on that day.

Trailer of the Week: Nosotros los Pobres (1948)

Tomorrow is my late father's birthday. Mexican actor/singer Pedro Infante was one of his favorite movie stars. Nosotros los Pobres -- aka We the Poor -- was one of Infante's most famous movies -- and one of the few Spanish-language films I ever watched with my late father. I know it is not the most conventional choice for a July 4th weekend -- but then July 4th weekends were never all that conventional in my family.

Laugh of the Week

The Muppets celebrate Independence Day as only the Muppets can. Yes, this bit is a little late, but who doesn't love the Muppets?

Movie Song of the Week: “Yankee Doodle Dandy”

From 1942's Yankee Doodle Dandy, it's the title song. The most famous song Jimmy Cagney ever danced to. (Not that Cagney danced to a lot of songs, but some were more famous than others.)

Personally, I prefer his work in Footlight Parade but this song is nice too. And, hey, it is a most appropriate song for Independence Day weekend.

Enjoy:
