Movie Song of the Week: "Mother Knows Best (Reprise)"

This week I post the inevitable sequel to this tune in honor of -- er -- mothers who are nothing like the Donna Murphy character in this musical number. Next year I'll try to find something more fitting.

Movie Song of the Week: "He's a Rebel"

My favorite musical moment from the otherwise mediocre 2018 thriller Bad Times at the El Royale. To be fair, there are other great musical moments too -- almost all of them involving actress Cynthia Erivo -- but this scene is my favorite.

Movie Song of the Week: "Hollywood Ending"

It's High School Musical meets Buffy the Vampi -- er -- Zombie Slayer in a little musical number from the new movie Anna and the Apocalypse that seems deliberately designed to make me wonder if I owe Tim Burton an apology for not being more enthusiastic about his musical collaborations with Danny Elfman. For that matter, I can't help wondering if I owe Joss Whedon an apology too.

Perhaps Geena Davis said it best: Be afraid. Be very afraid.

After all, if this musical is successful, we might see many more like it.

Movie Song of the Week: "Welcome to Burlesque"

I never thought to associate this song with ice skating until a few weeks ago when I heard it used as background music for one of the recent ice skating competitions that my mother was watching on TV. Indeed, I'm a bit embarrassed that I didn't recognize the tune immediately though it has been a long while since I've seen the 2010 movie Burlesque from which it comes. Oh, well. Even mediocre Cher is more memorable than most singers who aren't Cher and I think it's a bit of a kick to see her go all toast of Mayfair on the audience in this number. I hope you all enjoy it.

Movie Song of the Week: "I'm Number One"

At long last a musical number that explains the complex relationship between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. And it was made before Trump even thought of running for President.

Movie Song of the Week: "Hooked on Classics Parts 1 & 2"

From the soundtrack of the 2017 Tom Cruise movie American Made comes one of the weirdest Top Forty songs of the early 1980s.

Movie Song of the Week: "Another Day of Sun"

Heh. It's raining in Dallas so why shouldn't I post this number from last year's movie musical La La Land? If nothing else, the dark-skinned brunette in the yellow dress makes for a cheery sight.

Movie Song of the Week: "Space Oddity"

In light of recent events, this song seems eerily appropriate.

Movie Song of the Week: "In Summer"

This dude really needs to stop using my current novia's name in this song.

Movie Song of the Week: "Mother Knows Best"

I must admit that my mother was never like the mother in this song from the 2010 film Tangled. And neither are most mothers I have met.

However, I have met some mothers who are not much different than this. And for me, the saddest part of the video is when Rapunzel goes to hug the woman she believes to be her mother because she wants so much to be loved that she will almost put up with anything for sake of her mother's love. And unfortunately, I have known women in real life who are much like that too.

Movie Song of the Week: "Star Spangled Man"

Mitt Romney can only wish that this song was about him. And no, it's not about Obama either.

Movie Song of the Week: "Me Party"

Too late for Valentine's Day but just in time for Mardi Gras, it's a cute song from Disney's The Muppets featuring Amy Adams and Miss Piggy on vocals. And yes, you did read that correctly but you better not be expecting any beads because neither Ms. Adams nor Miss Piggy is that kind of girl.

Anyway, it is too bad that this number is not a political song because I'm pretty tempted to vote for a Me Party right now. After all, it couldn't be any worse than the two parties we already have.

Movie Song of the Week: "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend"

Heh. Marilyn who? You say Nicole Kidman did a number like this as well? You don't say...

But seriously, folks.

This week I post an brief excerpt from my favorite musical guilty pleasure of the last two years: the 2010 musical Burlesque -- a film ironically recommended to me by a female acquaintance. If nothing else, it's nice to see Christina Aguilera and Kristen Bell cast against type. And the other women in the number aren't exactly tough to look at either.

I hope you all enjoy it.
