¡Feliz Cumpleaños, Simón Bolívar!

AKA Simón José Antonio de la Santísima Trinidad Bolívar y Palacios Ponte y Blanco.

Born July 24, 1783. Died December 17, 1830.

He was one of the most influential people in the history of South America. Without him, much of the continent would still be part of the Spanish Empire. Unfortunately, his post-revolutionary life is not quite as Washingtonian as I might wish. Yet he still continues to play an influential role in South American politics today and two South American countries (Bolivia and Venezuela*) are named after him.

* AKA the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
