¡Feliz Cumpleaños, Elfego Baca!
Born February 10, 1865. Died August 27, 1945.
He was a lawman of Mexican descent who fought in -- and survived -- one of the biggest shootouts in New Mexico's history while he was still a deputy sheriff. He also became a lawyer and after his death, he inspired the Walt Disney television miniseries The Nine Lives of Elfego Baca.
Elfego Baca was one of the most famous heroes of the Wild West that most people had never heard of. However, I suspect that if he had been of the same ethnic background as Billy the Kid, we would have heard more than our fair share about him and then some.
