Pop Song of the Week: “One Night in Bangkok”

How about a nice game of chess?

Last Dance with MaryJane?

I'm beginning to realize why people get so cynical about drug users.

The same female friend who swore up and down last year that she was never smoking marijuana again because she was so worried about flunking a drug test has admitted to me recently that she has smoked marijuana since that time. She also recently claimed to have quit -- but not until after she got a ticket for marijuana possession.

The funny thing is that I have known enough people -- both "respectable" and not so respectable -- who have smoked the stuff that I should have known better. But since the person in question is also a friend, I let my idealism blind me to factors a more cynical me would have picked up on.

I would like to believe that the woman is on the right path now. But for how long?

Movie Song of the Week: “Babysitting Blues”

It's been one of those months and almost everyone I know has some form of the blues. So why not post this song from 1987's Adventures in Babysitting?

Literary Quote I Like

“Feudalism and socialism,” sneered Emil. “As if those were the only choices. A science-fiction writer has a duty, I think, to be progressive. He should be seeking to invent new systems, not glorifying old ones that have become archaic.”

Yolanda shrugged and looked at her feet. “I would have said that his only obligation is to stimulate thought,” she said. “To inspire the reader to consider existing realities in new ways.”

Hey, I Remember This Show: F Troop

It was one of the most popular Western comedies of the 1960s as well as being a TV show which I suspect every member of my generation knew from years of syndicated reruns. I could not help being reminded of it during the Pistols 'N' Petticoats intro -- which may be the reason why that particular show failed to last more than a year -- it reminded viewers too much of then-current hit F Troop. Of course, that is just my theory. And if you do not like that theory -- I got others.

Hey, I Don't Remember This Show: Pistols 'N' Petticoats

Hey, Ann Sheridan, star of 1942's George Washington Slept Here, had a TV show. She didn't have it for very long apparently but she did have one.

I must confess that the title made me expect something different than what the opening credits actually delivered but I guess that says more about me than it does the show.

Update: According to Ivan G. Shreve, Jr., of Thrilling Days of Yesteryear, the reason the show didn't last so long is because Ann Sheridan literally died during the first season. So please ignore any theorizing I might have done on another post. I did not mean to make light of such a serious subject.

Buscando Trabajo de Nuevo: Parte XVIII

My sister spent most of her birthday celebration kvetching about her new job but deep down it seemed obvious that she was glad to be working. Besides, as one who once worked a retail position similar to my sister's current job, I must admit that it's kinda hard to hold that type of job and not kvetch. In private, at least.

Me? I'm still searching. It's been over a year since I got laid off so I suspect I'll have to renew my application.

I've been trying to resist commenting on the job situation but I will say this: I don't think God will look too kindly upon the type of employers who are using this time to take advantage of people.

In other news, a young person in my training class complained about how the "old" people were taking up the good jobs that would normally be open to people his age. (He was in his late teens.) Ironically, the last time I spoke to a fortysomething co-worker who had also been laid off by my former employer, she gave the impression that all the good jobs were going to the young folks and that people her age were being passed over because they were "over-qualified." That just goes to show it's always something.

Perhaps it would be easier to acknowledge that no one group is getting off scot-free in this economy. Except for employers. And I'm sure they have their troubles too.

Movie Song of the Week: “In Dreams”

Dean Stockwell and the late Dennis Hopper show us all why director David Lynch was never a big fan of karaoke night in a number from 1986's Blue Velvet.

I hope you all -- well, I am not quite sure “enjoy it” are the best words to use here but if you can think of better ones, I would be glad to hear them...

To Boldly Go Where We Have Been Before

I liked Star Trek: The Original Series well enough when I was in my teens and I liked the Star Trek movies very much when I was in my twenties. But I never loved the series the way others seemed to love the series and I never got the appeal of watching certain episodes over and over again even though I had a number of favorite episodes I did not mind seeing more than once.

When the new Star Trek movie by Alias creator J.J. Abrams came out last summer, I found myself somewhat surprised by my indifference toward the new movie. Even my mother -- who was never much of a science fiction fan, much less a Star Trek aficionada -- was more interested in the new movie and while I will not pretend that watching the new movie was the equivalent of pulling out my fingernails, I cannot really pretend that it revived my interest in the series. At best it was a watchable -- but not particularly memorable -- movie which was good for an occasional Saturday night rental -- but not much else.

Why should this matter?

Because last year's Star Trek movie made enough money to already provoke rumors of a sequel. And while I must admit that I would rather see yet another Star Trek movie than another Hot Tub Time Machine or 40 Year Virgin, I cannot help but wonder about the projects that we will never see because of Hollywood's insistence that successful sci-fi = Star Trek. Or Star Wars. Or X-Files. Or any idea that has already been done before.

For example, what would be wrong with a new sci-fi movie that is not part of the Star Trek universe? (Or for that matter, the Star Wars universe, the X-Files universe, etc.)

Why not adapt a novel from author Philip Jose Farmer's classic Riverworld series? Or Robert Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land? Or Roger Zelazny's Lord of Light? Or better yet, some original sci-fi idea.

As much as I liked Star Trek, there is something about the endless chain of sequels, spin-offs and remakes of that series that turns me off. After all, the main appeal of science fiction has always been that of an universe where anything can happen. So why do so many fans of that genre seem to prefer going to the same old places over and over again? I will admit that Star Trek was one of the better sci-fi series to air on TV and I will even admit that Star Trek the movie was one of the better movies to come out last year.

But it was not that good.

And even if it were, is not it time to try something new? Or should we choose to boldly go where everyone and his cousin has already gone before?

Hey, I Remember This Show: The Cisco Kid

Many of my older cousins just loved this show. Unfortunately, the closest I ever got to getting involved with it was agreeing to wear a straw hat like Pancho's every Halloween -- and even then the main reason I wore it had more to do with my parents' not being able to afford store-bought costumes than any actual interest in the show.

That said, I cannot help but wonder if I was a bit hasty in judging it. Moreover, I wonder what author O. Henry -- the creator of the Cisco Kid -- would think of this version of his character. I would like to think he is flattered.

Hey, I Don't Remember This Show: The High Chaparral

According to the IMDB, this series was one of the first Western TV shows to feature Hispanic actors actually playing Hispanic characters -- apart from, of course, The Cisco Kid -- so naturally I never watched it.

Okay, to be fair, I was not a big fan of Westerns when I was growing up and while I would not have minded seeing a TV show with Hispanic characters when I was growing up, the only such show I remember watching on a regular basis when this show was on the air (1967-1971) was I Love Lucy.

I suspect such a failing is my loss since Argentine-born actress Linda Cristal -- who played Victoria -- was quite the looker in her day and the rest of the cast does not seem so bad either.

If I was more politically correct, I could say something snarky about the fact that the show was set in 19th century Arizona but then some of my favorite celebrities -- Linda Ronstadt, for example -- hail from Arizona -- and anyway, it is not fair to blame a show made in the late 1960s for the politics of the 21st century. Especially when the politics of so many TV shows of the 21st century leave much to be desired.

Thoughts on the Movie Lists: Parte I

1. Gracias a Dios they're almost over. After the next three lists, I'll be officially done with these lists until next January.

2. Who knew I saw so many bad movies?

3. As embarrassing as the number of bad movies I've seen is, it's even more embarrassing to note how often the more important movies I've seen rarely come up the first time I make a movie list.

4. Once again I must note that my movie lists are of all the theatrical movies I've literally seen that were released within a certain year. They are not lists of all the good movies I've seen from a certain year. Nor of the best movies to be released during a certain year. And they're not even my favorite movies of a certain year. They're just attempts on my part to publicly sort out all the movies I have seen as opposed to all the movies I haven't yet seen.

5. Yes, I am embarrassed by the number of good movies that should be on these lists but aren't. I hope to remedy that in the future.

Movie Song of the Week: “Summer Nights”

And now a happy song from one of my sister's favorite movies. It's tempting to call this my generation's version of “I Remember It Well” for reasons that should become obvious after you all have viewed the videos. But it works just as well without the Gigi references.

First, a version for my sister and my various English-speaking relatives and acquaintances:

And now, a version for my bilingual relatives:

Recuerdos: Parte I

This photo has haunted me ever since I saw it on another site. Not because I have that many fond memories of Nine 1/2 Weeks, but because I actually know someone in real life who used to look like that woman in the picture (i.e. Kim Basinger) when she was younger -- and I never realized how much she used to look that way until after I saw the photo.

There are other reasons the photo haunts me but that is all I will admit to at this time. Suffice to say that while there are obvious differences between Kim Basinger's character in the movie and the woman I know, it is not a coincidence that I found myself drawn to that photo. The woman I know has had a sad life too. But she will never admit it to most people.

A Dream of Fall or a Dream of...

I dreamt last Saturday night about being on a mountain road trying to pass a truck and getting too close to the edge of the road each time I tried to do so. Almost as if I had no control over my vehicle.

The next day I slipped and fell while taking a shower. Fortunately, I was not hurt but I cannot help but wonder whether that was the disaster my dream was anticipating -- or whether there is something far worse waiting for me in the near-future.

100 More Sci-Fi Books One Must Read

Yet another list, this time courtesy of Lynn of Violins and Starships, who got it from here. As usual, the ones I've read already are in bold. I'll be charitable and forego commentary beyond that point. I must admit, however, that I'm surprised Aldous Huxley's Brave New World is on neither of these lists. Is that supposed to be an omen or something?

Quote of the Week

Because I don't take my clothes off, and I'm nobody's girlfriend. The writers are new to the whole tough girl thing, and they don't know what to do with [me]. We've got the dude who's strong, so what do we do with the chick who's strong? We kill her. Eventually they'll get used to it, and maybe Salt will change a thing or two.
--Michelle Rodriguez, in response to a question about why she's always getting killed off in her screen roles
